What is Kundalini Yoga?

Kundalini yoga is a form of yoga that focuses on awakening the ‘kundalini energy’ believed to lie dormant at the base of the spine. It combines physical postures (asanas), breathing techniques (pranayama), meditation, and chanting of mantras into a comprehensive practice.

Key elements of Kundalini yoga include:

  1. Kriyas: a structured sequence of postures, breath, and sound that work toward a particular outcome.
  2. Breath control: especially ‘breath of fire’ (rapid diaphragmatic breathing).
  3. Mantras and chanting: sacred chants, such as ‘Sat Nam’ (meaning ‘Truth is my identity’) and sounds from Gurmukhi (a sacred language).
  4. Mudras: and gestures used to direct energy.
  5. Meditation: focusing on energy centers and consciousness.

Kundalini differs from other forms of yoga in its focus on internal energy and spiritual awakening rather than just physical fitness or flexibility.
